At Twenty Two West, you can see the studio floor from the shop. The studio and storefront is at 2338 The Plaza in Plaza Midwood, Charlotte, in a former home.
Mary, the founder and artist, makes rings, bracelets, necklaces and earrings from porcelain clay and natural fibers. She also makes wall art and tabletop pieces. The page describes her process as forming, firing, combing and weaving. Her days start with clay and thread.
The business grows out of the home where Mary grew up and the women who first taught her to love making things. She says she wants to push back against mass production with artisan work. The work is ethically sourced and ethically made, and custom orders are available.
If you want to try it yourself, the Bracelet Bar workshop lets you pick from a wide range of colorful threads and design your own bracelet bundle. You book it through the website.
The storefront is open Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., with parking in the back. Inside is the Chai Window, a tea bar serving chai made in house, with local businesses invited to apply for popups.
Come in for a bracelet, and leave knowing who made it.
