The Liberty Book Company

At The Liberty Book Company in Rock Hill, the staff don’t start by asking what you like to read. They ask what movies, TV shows, or games you like, and then they suggest books.

That’s how the Liberty team helps new readers and long-time readers alike. The owner has more than 20 years of bookselling experience, and she opened Liberty in 2018 with co-workers from the bookstore she’d co-managed for over a decade. It sells new and used books, from recent releases to 200-year-old antique editions, along with puzzles, games, and tabletop RPG supplies. Cozy chairs and nooks fill the space.

Liberty runs several book clubs, works with the York County Public Library and the Palmetto Reading Council, and gives local writers and artisans a spot on the shelves. The store opened after four other independent Rock Hill bookstores had closed, and it kept going through the pandemic by making and selling masks. “We want every visitor to the bookstore to find it to be a place where they can enjoy a sense of belonging,”

The name comes from the Moultrie Flag, a South Carolina icon from the American Revolution also called the Liberty Flag.
