Why LearnLocal exists

Your city's personality lives in its small businesses. The bookshop with the blue doors. The tea shop is a converted bus. The place where the staff already know your order. None of it happens by accident, and none of it is guaranteed to last.
Most of us find places to spend money through apps and search results that favor whoever pays for attention. Chains and platforms are built to pull dollars out of the neighborhood. Independent businesses keep them there, but they rarely have an ad budget to compete. That is a problem with the system, not with shoppers, and it's the one LearnLocal is trying to change.
What LearnLocal is
LearnLocal is a free app for finding independent businesses near you. Every business we list is privately and regionally owned, isn't a franchisor, and isn't planning to take its brand into other markets. I research and write the stories behind them myself, so you meet the people behind the counter before you walk in.
How the Underground Market works
Join Team Local, which is free. Earn Market Keys by taking part in the community. Spend them to unlock deals from independent businesses. When you redeem one, you get a code that works for 24 hours.
For business owners
Listing is pay-what-you-can, starting at $3 a month, with the same benefits at every level. I set it up that way because the businesses this app is for are the ones with the least to spare.
Where it's going
LearnLocal started in historic downtown York, South Carolina, and is growing through the Charlotte area. It's built for anywhere. I'm building it on my own, with no outside investment. I'm exploring ways to grow it that keep power with the people in it, guided by doughnut economics, and I'd like to look at employee ownership down the road.
