Black Sheep's motto is "Esse Quam Videri" — Latin for "to be, rather than to seem," which also happens to be North Carolina's own state motto. For a skate shop that's stayed skater-owned and independently operated since 2003, the overlap feels less like a coincidence and more like a statement.
The shop carries what it says it carries: the area's largest selection of skateboards and accessories, alongside Nike SB, Vans, Adidas, Asics Skateboarding, New Balance Numeric, Carhartt WIP, and Dickies. That's a real product depth most specialty shops can't match, but it's still run the way it started — by people who actually skate, not a retail chain wearing skate culture as a marketing angle.
Twenty-plus years is a long time for an independent skate shop to survive in a city that's changed as much as Charlotte has. Black Sheep is still here, still stocking decks and shoes for the people who show up looking for exactly that.
