The Spoke Easy started as the empty space next to an architecture firm. On 11.11.11, Kevin Kennedy and Chris Scorsone, who already ran the Cluck Design studio beside it, turned that space into a bike shop.
The idea was to keep exploring city planning and community building through bicycles and bike infrastructure. They called the concept "where bicycles and design meet," and the goal is to remove the barriers to cycling: good-looking, functional gear and stellar service, built for the everyday rider.
The shop has grown into more than a shop. It describes itself as a bike shop, a bar, and an independent music venue with a big patio, and it runs group rides and events that support the community in Elizabeth. Repairs can be booked online, there's a mobile bike service, consignment bikes, financing, and custom builds. The merch shelf is full of collaborations with artists.
The shop has been voted Best Bicycle Shop in Charlotte five years in a row by QC Nerve.
