Michelle Castelloe spent 14 years as a brand director at Urban, Inc. for Anthropologie, a role that included overseeing 50 stores. In 2015 she left to open Moxie Mercantile, a vintage and modern lifestyle boutique in Plaza Midwood, Charlotte.
She says she started it because she had lost touch with her community. The shop sells gifts, home décor, candles, bath and beauty, apparel, jewelry, kids’ items and stationery. It stocks work from local independent artists next to vintage finds, and Castelloe mentors makers on pricing and other basics of running a business. Her goal is to help creative people earn a living from their work.
Moxie grew from one store to several in the Charlotte area, including one in Matthews. In 2021 she opened Betty by Moxie Mercantile, a sister store on Thomas Avenue that sells children’s clothing, adult apparel, toys and gifts. She named it for Betty Ziegler Mims, who owned the building’s previous shop, Bride’s House of Originals.
The store is “rooted in community, driven by purpose, and fueled by moxie.” You can also shop online.
