Most ice cream is trying to be vanilla. Bajo Cero San Marcos is trying to be salty, tangy, sweet, and spicy in one bite.
It’s a locally owned Mexican-style ice cream shop at 2401 Cherry Road in Rock Hill, run by Jazmin Deyerle, who is originally from Mexico. The ice cream, paletas, and agua fresca are all made in-store with fresh ingredients and no artificial flavoring or food coloring. Paletas are popsicles built from real fruit, and the ice cream is creamier than the stuff in a supermarket tub. “In Mexico we really like to mix flavors together,” Deyerle says.
There’s a family reason behind the menu. Deyerle’s father used to take her out for Mexican-style ice cream when she visited family in California, and the shop is a tribute to him, her four children, and her culture.
You can order for delivery or pickup, but the best way is to go in, look at the case, and let somebody tell you what to try.
