People tell me they love plants, but they kill them,” says Whitney Shea. So she built a store where you can sit among plants without taking responsibility for one.
Green Space Plant Company is a plant shop and wine bar at 151 E. Main St. in downtown Rock Hill. Shea, a Florence native and Winthrop University education major, taught school before she started selling plants at weekend festivals from a table and a tent. Then came a mobile trailer, and now a storefront she calls an indoor jungle. It smells like pine. Wine bottles line the back wall. There are couches, so you can relax with a glass or without one.
She noticed that many people enjoy plants but don’t want to take one home, so she gave them somewhere to be around them. Wine was her second draw because it suited her better than coffee. A back room doubles as a classroom for beginners and for people trying to figure out what they’ve been doing wrong. “I always say it takes the right plant for the right person in the right space,” she says. She still sells at the Fort Mill Farmers & Artisans Market on Saturday mornings.
